Description

In the 30th century, Viking terrorists, led by the vicious Great Hilagi, are plundering and destroying planets throughout the Galaxy. They move in warships capable of travelling in Nether Space… and Earth is their next target.

Now, there has been an assault on the laboratory of the renowned scientist Dr. Zerrek Keene, who, in a state near death, has summoned his granddaughter, Zana Keene. “Zana,” he said, “while experimenting with Nether Space transmission, I caused a huge magnetic field to be formed around our planet, and it has attracted the attention of the barbaric Viking Terrorists.” Dr. Keene pressed a keycard into her palm, and with his last breath, whispered, “Zana, use this… save Earth.”

Zana Keene, trained as a test pilot at the United Government Military Academy, knew what he had given her… access to the “Chameleon” ERX-75 space fighter – capable of combat in Nether Space, and of transforming itself into a robot – the strongest weapon ever developed by the United Earth Army. Zana Keene knew what she must do. “Use this… save Earth.”

Arrow Flash

Overview & History

Released by Asmik Corporation for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 1990, Arrow Flash is a sci-fi side-scrolling shoot 'em up heavily inspired by Sega's own classic Thunder Force series. The storyline unfolds in a distant future where humanity faces total annihilation from an aggressive alien armada known as the Zarkus. Players step into the cockpit of the advanced prototype fighter craft, the AF-91 Arrow Flash. Interestingly, the lore establishes a generational pilot system: players control veteran pilot Commander Dan Stroud in the opening stages, eventually passing the torch to his daughter, Lady Cecil, as the galactic war intensifies. The game stands out for its atmospheric world-building, utilizing striking sprite designs and an electronic synthesizer soundtrack composed by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi to deliver a memorable early-90s arcade experience at home.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Arrow Flash combines traditional horizontal scrolling shmup action with deep tactical flexibility. The defining gameplay mechanic is the titular "Arrow Flash" gauge, which allows players to unleash devastating screen-clearing energy blasts. Unlike standard bombs in other shooters, this gauge can be charged dynamically during combat. Players can also toggle between two distinct ship forms on the fly by collecting specific power-up icons: the nimble, high-speed jet mode or the heavily armored, multi-directional walker mech mode. This transformation mechanic alters not only the ship's silhouette and hitbox but also the firing pattern of its default weaponry, forcing players to adapt their strategy against swarms of biomechanical foes and towering boss constructs across six intense stages.
