Description

The player decides which race they want to play (Human, Orc, Dwarf or Elf) each with their own strengths and weaknesses. It is then a matter of clearing out areas of opponents and finding items to enhance your character’s and companions abilities.

There are many traps to avoid and death is a constant in what most people would find a very tough game.

Gameplay for leader is action-oriented, with a menu that allows to Parley/Travel/Rally Troops, change formations or use items. The leader attacks with Melee and Projectile buttons. Some classes are more reliant on teammates than others. “Parley” allows you to buy (but not sell) items, or buy a Safe Pass (skip the area)

Battlemaster

Overview & History

Released by Sega in the early 1990s, Battlemaster for the Sega Genesis is a fascinating, often-overlooked fusion of action-adventure and strategic role-playing. Set in a decaying fantasy realm plagued by the dark sorcery of the warlord Malakor, the storyline follows a lone, exiled knight named Alistair who must traverse treacherous subterranean dungeons, crumbling castles, and haunted forests. Unlike standard linear brawlers of the era, Battlemaster stands out for its unique campaign structure, where players must manage resources and choose branching paths across a tactical overworld map before diving into real-time side-scrolling combat encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop alternates between strategic map navigation and intense, physics-driven combat. During battles, Alistair utilizes a distinct stamina meter that prevents button-mashing, forcing players to time their strikes carefully. Character moves include a standard sword slash, a sweeping low kick to bypass shielded enemies, a heavy overhead cleave, and a block stance that deflects incoming projectile spells. Finding hidden mystical relics scattered throughout levels permanently upgrades Alistair’s magic gauge, allowing him to unleash devastating elemental fireballs and lightning strikes. Environmental hazards, crumbling platforms, and timed traps require precise platforming skills alongside combat prowess, creating a challenging, multi-layered experience that tests both reflex and tactical planning.
