Description

Prince Ali has found the magical Golden Armlet, which was used many years ago to defeat an evil wizard who wielded its counterpart, the Silver Armlet. The Prince has now to stop the evil sorcerer and save the island of Oasis. To do so, he will need his wits, skills ,and the powers of the four Wild Spirits.

Beyond Oasis (also known as The Story of Thor) is a fast-paced action game with RPG elements. The Prince’s default weapon is the knife, which has unlimited uses. During the course of the game, the hero will also find other weapons, such as bows, swords, and bombs. All these weapons have limited uses and will eventually break.

The Wild Spirits are elementals the player can call to help to destroy enemies, heal the hero, or solve puzzles. These are the fire spirit, the water spirit, the plant spirit, and the shadow spirit.

The game has a large assortment of monsters, including massive creatures such as the Red Dragon boss or zombies that split in two, with their torsos continuing to crawl and attack the hero.

Released by Sega in 1994 for the Genesis, Beyond Oasis (known as The Story of Thor in PAL regions and Japan) was developed by Ancient, the studio founded by legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro. As a late-era 16-bit action-RPG, it sought to capture the top-down exploratory magic of titles like The Legend of Zelda while injecting frantic, beat-em-up combat mechanics. Players assume the role of Prince Ali, a young adventurer who stumbles upon the Armlet of Brass—a golden gauntlet housing the water spirit Daito. This discovery thrusts Ali into an epic quest across the continent of Oasis to defeat the bearer of the malevolent Armlet of Silver, Agatio, and prevent a cataclysmic war. Lush sprite work, cinematic pacing, and an unforgettable, atmospheric soundtrack by Koshiro elevate this cartridge far beyond standard fantasy tropes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional turn-based RPGs, Beyond Oasis relies entirely on real-time, arcade-style skirmishes. Prince Ali fights with an assortment of degrading weapons—swords, heavy crossbows, and magic bombs—that eventually break with heavy use. However, his most formidable asset is the Armlet of Brass, which allows him to summon four elemental spirits (Daito the water spirit, Efreet the fire spirit, Bowldar the earth spirit, and Shade the shadow spirit) by using magical energy rings found throughout the world. Each spirit fundamentally alters exploration and combat: Efreet incinerates wooden barriers and enemies, while Bowldar can crush boulders and lift heavy obstacles. Ali's base moveset is deeply inspired by fighting games; executing directional inputs on the D-Pad combined with the attack button lets Ali unleash spinning slash combos, dashing knee strikes, and high-velocity rolling attacks. Environmental interaction is crucial, as players must frequently solve physics-based puzzles utilizing spirit magic, throw objects to stun aggressive goblins and lizardmen, and manage a stamina meter to survive grueling boss encounters.
