Description

Budokan is a martial arts game covering Karate (unarmed combat), Kendo (using a wooden sword), Nunchaku (using piercing chain weapons) and Bo (using a staff). The player has a realistic range of moves and must use them wisely, as Ki (life-force) is drained for every move made, whether successful or not, and both this and your stamina level must be kept high.

You can practice your skills alone, or spar against the instructors or your friends. Finally, when you feel you are ready, you can travel to the martial arts world championship tournament at Budokan.

Budokan: The Martial Spirit

Overview & History

Released by Electronic Arts in 1989 for DOS and later ported to the Sega Genesis in 1990, Budokan: The Martial Spirit stands as a pioneering milestone in martial arts gaming. Developed by Systems Design, the game avoids traditional side-scrolling beat-'em-up tropes in favor of a realistic, disciplined simulation of traditional Japanese weaponry and hand-to-hand combat. Players assume the role of an ambitious martial artist training in a secluded dojo, progressing from a novice white belt to a grandmaster worthy of entering the prestigious Budokan tournament to face the formidable master, Igusa.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop is divided into two distinct phases: Dojo Training and Tournament Combat. Before stepping into the ring, players must condition their bodies in the dojo, practicing forms and sparring against a wooden dummy to build strength, speed, and stamina. The game features four distinct weapons: the Bo staff, Nunchaku, Katana, and Sai, alongside empty-handed Karate. Each weapon dictates a specific fighting style with unique reach, speed, and recovery frames. Combat takes place on a strict 2D plane with an emphasis on spacing, parrying, and managing an exhaustion meter. Landing a clean strike depletes the opponent's health bar or scores points based on the match format, requiring tactical patience rather than frantic button-mashing.
