Description
A game endorsed by the American player who stunned the tennis world in the early 90s with his “Image is everything” looks, sporting long hair, earrings and colorful shirts, Andre Agassi Tennis includes eight players (male and female and as as expected, only Agassi is a real player) rated according to movement speed and both accuracy and strength on serve, backhand and forehand.
Gameplay features all the usual moves: smashes, passing shots, volleys and all kinds of backhand and forehand plays, but unlike other games, precise positioning and timing are crucial to avoid hitting the ball outside the court, swinging the racket into thin air or more embarrassing, let the ball hit you on the head.
Three courts are available: Grass, Clay and Indoor (Sega versions add a fourth, Hard), but the differences between them are minimal. Game modes change according to the version, with the 16-bit versions including a “Skins” game, where each point is worth a sum of money based on the number of times the ball was hit.
Andre Agassi Tennis
Overview & History
Released in 1992 by TecToy in Brazil and later ported to North American audiences by Lance Investments, Andre Agassi Tennis for the Sega Genesis capitalized on the neon-clad superstar's rising global fame. Unlike traditional tennis titles of the 16-bit era that favored a standard broadcast angle, this game introduced an innovative behind-the-back vertical perspective. While this shift initially disoriented players accustomed to horizontal court views, it brilliantly simulated the actual depth perception of returning a blistering 100 mph baseline serve. The game lacks a deep narrative campaign, instead offering an arcade-style tournament ladder where players battle through a fictionalized global circuit to face Agassi himself in the championship match, complete with pixelated representations of his signature long hair and denim shorts.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The game distinguishes itself through a risk-and-reward shot-meter and stamina system. Players must carefully time their swings while accounting for ball spin, court surface friction (which affects grass, clay, and hard courts differently), and Agassi's distinct fatigue levels. The control scheme demands precision: holding down specific action buttons allows players to execute blistering topspins, biting backspins, or precise lobs to exploit an opponent's court positioning. Volleying at the net requires split-second reflexes, as late inputs result in weak, easily smashable returns. The inclusion of subtle wind dynamics and a forgiving yet demanding out-of-bounds detection system elevates it beyond a mere button-masher, requiring genuine strategic court management to outmaneuver AI opponents who aggressively target your weak backhand.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move player across the baseline and approach the net
- Action Keys: Execute topspin, slice, lob, and smash shots (A, B, C buttons)
- Enter: Start / Pause
