Description

Tetris is a game that appears as one of the 42 games ported to the Mega Drive Mini / Sega Genesis Mini. It is a port, created by M2, of Sega’s 1988 arcade version.

Not to be confused with the unreleased Tetris developed by Sanritsu Denki and cancelled shortly before release on 15 April 1989, which featured different gameplay mechanics to the arcade version.

Being faithful to the arcade, M2’s port does not have wall kicks, and increasing the level is accomplished by either clearing 4 lines in any combination of line clears or placing a tetromino after the “level timer” reaches a certain value.

Tetris (M2)

Overview & History

Commissioned by Sega in the late 1980s as an arcade sensation, the unreleased Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) port of *Tetris* by developer M2 stands as one of the gaming industry's most fascinating near-myths. Due to complex licensing disputes involving Tengen, Nintendo, and Elorg, Sega's completed Genesis cartridge was pulled from distribution just days before its scheduled launch, making original hardware copies extraordinarily rare collector's items. Stripped of any narrative storyline—relying purely on Alexey Pajitnov's timeless geometric addiction—this M2-engineered version is celebrated among retro enthusiasts for its remarkably tight programming, distinct aesthetic flair, and a phenomenal cooperative two-player mode that elevates the puzzle formula beyond standard competitive duels.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard iterations, the M2 Genesis port features distinct visual themes, vibrant background animations, and responsive handling that eliminates the frustrating input lag found in lesser ports. Players manipulate seven distinct tetromino shapes (I, J, L, O, S, T, Z) as they descend into a 10x20 playing field. The core objective remains clearing horizontal lines by completely filling them, which in turn causes them to vanish and increases the cumulative score. The M2 version introduces robust speed settings, precise wall-kick allowances, and an intense cooperative mode where two players share a single, wider matrix to survive an escalating barrage of garbage blocks. Scoring rewards multi-line clearances, culminating in the coveted four-line "Tetris" bonus.
