Developed by Realtime Associates and published by Viacom New Media in 1994, Beavis and Butt-Head for the Sega Genesis is a chaotic, faithful adaptation of Mike Judge’s iconic MTV animated duo. Set against the backdrop of Highland, Texas, the storyline kicks off when the dim-witted slackers discover their favorite band, Gwar, is playing a live concert in town. Unfortunately, their ticket gets torn into multiple pieces and scattered across various dreadful locations, including Highland High School, the local mall, and the Maxi-Mart. The boys must brave hazards, annoying teachers, and angry townsfolk just to piece their ticket back together. Released during the height of the show's cultural phenomenon, the game captured the crude, subversive humor of the original cartoon, right down to the voice clips and signature chuckles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups of the era, the gameplay leans heavily into puzzle-solving, item management, and slapstick physics. Beavis and Butt-Head act as a tag-team unit; players can switch between controlling either slacker or play cooperatively with a friend. The world is interactive, allowing the duo to collect and combine bizarre junk items—like frogs, t-shirts, and spitballs—to create improvised weapons or solve environmental riddles. Combat relies on melee strikes, burps, farts, and ranged projectiles. Health is represented by a "Cool-O-Meter," which drains if they take damage or do something particularly uncool. Scattered throughout the levels are television sets that transport the duo to couch-bound mini-games, letting them watch and mock vintage music videos. The sprawling, nonlinear stages require thorough exploration, precise platforming, and a healthy appreciation for 1990s counterculture absurdity to conquer.
