Description

In 1995 Blockbuster organized their second Video Game Championship. There were two categories, up to 13 and over 14 years old. Contestants chose to compete on the SNES or SEGA Genesis. From June 14th to July 9th there was a Store Championship Competition, then the WVGC-Finals. Each store awarded a Store Champion with a prize of free rentals for the next two years (two games a month). The best eleven players then won a trip to San Francisco for the final fight in August, inside the GamePro (gaming magazine) HQ.
The cartridge was built by Acclaim Entertainment for North American units, and contains trimmed down versions of NBA Jam Tournament Edition and Judge Dredd, both released the same year. This cartridge is exceptionally rare, as only a handful were ever produced and the cartridge was ordered to be destroyed after use. Regardless, many cartridges have appeared on the internet, with the most recent being sold at auction for over $2000 USD.

Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II

Overview & History

Released exclusively in 1995 as a rare cartridge reward and rental-only promotional item for the Blockbuster Video store chain, Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II for the Sega Genesis is a legendary artifact of 90s competitive gaming culture. Building upon the success of its 1994 predecessor, this specialized multicart challenge was designed for official tournament play, tasking players with achieving the highest possible score across a strict time limit. Rather than featuring a traditional narrative storyline, the game plunges players straight into high-stakes arcade competition, utilizing a custom timing engine that seamlessly transitions contestants between distinct, high-intensity gaming trials before abruptly locking the controller inputs when the countdown reaches zero.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The cartridge packs heavily modified versions of Sega classics, notably *Judge Dredd* and *Demon's Crest*, tailored specifically for time-attack scoring. Players must balance aggressive combat with precise platforming to maximize point multipliers. In the *Judge Dredd* segment, you command the iconic lawman through futuristic slums, executing standard side-scrolling gunplay using Dredd's Lawgiver pistol. Players can switch ammunition types on the fly—utilizing standard bullets, high-explosive rounds, or heat-seekers—to exploit enemy vulnerabilities. The game demands memorization of enemy spawn points and meticulous routing. Health pickups are scarce, meaning survival relies on mastering the jump-and-shoot rhythm while keeping a watchful eye on the unyielding tournament timer that ticks down the seconds toward disqualification.
