Description

A new historical theme park, the Amazotarium, has been made. Though impressive, the park’s sinister technology is stealing away actual history and placing it on exhibit. Having taken his niece and nephew to the park, Bubsy loses them and is soon caught up in the evil plans of Oinker P. Hamm, who runs Amazaterium and wants to extort money from his unwitting customers who’ll “pay anything to see their own history”. Now, Bubsy needs to “humble” Oinker and close the fascinating-but-deadly Amazatorium before anyone faces a hairy ending.

Bubsy II

Overview & History

Released by Accolade in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Bubsy II serves as the polarizing sequel to the anthropomorphic bobcat's platforming debut. Capitalizing on the early-90s mascot craze, this installment was developed in-house by Eidetic (later Bend Studio) and rushed to shelves to capitalize on the fleeting popularity of fast-paced animal platformers. The storyline sends Bubsy on a bizarre, cross-dimensional rescue mission through history and pop culture after a villainous race called the Oinker Pugs and their leader, Arnold the Armadillo, steal the universe's ultimate artifacts from the Amazing Museum of Wow. Across radically themed stages, players guide the wisecracking cat through eras like Ancient World, Music World, and the futuristic Gnatty Raskall levels. While attempting to fix the continuity of time, Bubsy maintains his trademark sarcastic voice clips, which trigger endlessly upon taking damage or losing a precious life.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Bubsy II introduces a bifurcated level structure that abandons the purely linear progression of the original game in favor of a hub-world design. Players can tackle historical zones in any order using a rudimentary map screen, and even dive into newly added cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes—a rarity for the genre at the time. Core gameplay revolves around collecting millions of yarn balls scattered across sprawling, vertically oriented levels. Bubsy’s moveset includes his signature high jump, a terminal-velocity glide that slows his descent, and a specialized squash-and-stretch physics engine that dictates his momentum. Unlike the notoriously fragile protagonist of the first game, Bubsy can withstand up to three hits (represented by his health-meter wool sweaters) before losing a life. Unique additions include context-sensitive power-ups like a hammer, a paintbrush, and a pogo stick that temporarily alter traversal and combat. However, the game retains the notorious slippery controls, trial-and-error hazards, and sudden off-screen cheap deaths that define the franchise's legacy.
