Description

Deep space. The ultimate combat arena. Only pilots who call themselves “Space Fighter” do battle there. That’s why you train at Earth University with fellow-student Hiromi. For five rigorous testing days, you maneuver high-speed airbikes and lethal spacefighters within extraordinary 3-D like graphic environments. You skim earth terrain and the ruins of alien civilization, firing missiles and lasers to blaze a trail through hostile robots. Defeat boss enemies by upgrading and replenishing your armaments, and picking up invincibility shielding.

If you choose your weapons well and deftly maneuver your vehicle, you’ll pass the tests. Then comes deep space combat on the 6th day. Your final exam. Ace this one and the title “Space Fighter” is yours.

Burning Force

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1989 as a pioneering arcade title and later ported to the Sega Genesis in 1991, Burning Force is a pseudo-3D sci-fi rail shooter where players assume the role of Hi-Meka cadet Tachibana Tip. Set in the year 2005, Tip must complete a grueling three-day space-cadet graduation exam by fighting across six treacherous, alien-infested sectors before facing a final boss showdown. The Sega Genesis port brilliantly captures the frantic, scaling-sprite scaling action of Namco's arcade hardware, delivering a uniquely fast-paced vertical-scrolling shooter experience on the 16-bit console.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard horizontal shoot-'em-ups, Burning Force features a forward-scrolling, behind-the-ship perspective reminiscent of Sega's own Space Harrier. Players pilot Tip's customizable aircraft, which undergoes a dramatic transformation halfway through the game into a high-speed hovering motorcycle, altering both the visual aesthetic and mobility dynamics. As levels progress, Tip can collect various power-ups scattered across the terrain to upgrade her weaponry, adding piercing lasers, widespread photon bursts, and smart bombs to clear the screen of relentless mechanical and biological mutants. Quick reflexes are essential to weave through dense obstacles, jump over ground chasms, and survive punishing enemy volleys across the game's distinct planetary biomes.
