Description

Trouble is in the kingdom of Dilsarl: the young, beautiful princess Salasa was abducted by the evil arch-mage Balrog. The king seeks help from the four best warriors of the country. The task is clear, but not so simple: find Balrog, destroy his evil minions and other monsters roaming the land, and rescue the princess.

Cadash is a platform action role-playing game. The player chooses one of the four character classes in the beginning of the game: fighter, priestess, mage, or ninja (the Genesis version has only two characters: fighter and mage). The protagonist fights his or her way through dungeons, attacking physically or casting spells (as priestess or mage). Like in regular platform games, there are places where the player character is required to jump, duck, or climb. The protagonist gains experience for defeating monsters, and their level rises in a true RPG fashion.

Developed and published by Taito, *Cadash* made its triumphant transition from arcades to the Sega Genesis in 1992, courtesy of Working Designs in North America. Unlike standard side-scrolling hack-and-slash titles of its era, this dark fantasy epic infused traditional platforming with deep Action-RPG elements, requiring players to grind experience points, purchase superior weaponry, and manage health-restoring medicinal herbs across five perilous stages. Set in a grim medieval realm plagued by the resurrected demon Balrog, players must choose a champion to rescue the kidnapped Princess Salassa and restore peace to the kingdom of Cadash before the dark forces consume the land entirely.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Cadash distinguishes itself through a diverse roster of four unique heroes: the balanced swordsman Dargt, the agile female ninja Sarasa, the formidable magic-wielding priest Goldo, and the ranged-expert mage Theressa. Each character boasts distinct attack ranges, movement speeds, and magic abilities that fundamentally alter how you approach encounters with skeletal warriors, harpies, and subterranean beasts. Unlike the arcade original which supported cooperative multiplayer, the Sega Genesis port focuses strictly on a solo campaign. To survive the grueling bosses and bottomless pits, players must strategically collect gold dropped by enemies to buy armor upgrades and magic spells from hidden town merchants. The game utilizes a password system, allowing players to resume their grueling quest from later stages with their hard-earned stats and inventory intact.
