Released in 1993 by Sony Imagesoft, *Cliffhanger* for the Sega Genesis is a 16-bit movie-tie-in action platformer based on the Sylvester Stallone mountain-rescue thriller. Unlike the standard side-scrolling beat-'s-ups of its era, this title attempts a cinematic recreation of the film's tense alpine setting, blending traditional platforming stages across snowy peaks with overhead stealth missions and intense fist-to-fist boss encounters against the ruthless mercenary leader Eric Qualen, played by John Lithgow in the film. While Genesis movie ports often suffered from rushed development, *Cliffhanger* carved out a niche by forcing players to master freezing environmental hazards alongside traditional enemy combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players step into the crampons of Gabe Walker, a traumatized mountain rescue ranger who must navigate treacherous heights while battling armed mercenaries. The game design alternates between distinct play styles: horizontal platforming where Gabe scales icy precipices using his climbing axe, and 2D beat-'em-up brawl sequences. Combat is physical and grounded; Gabe lacks projectile weapons, forcing him to rely on close-quarters striking, dodging, and grabbing enemies to throw them into snowdrifts or off high ledges. Health is tied to both enemy damage and a body temperature gauge, requiring players to keep moving or seek shelter to avoid freezing in the brutal Rocky Mountain blizzards.
