Overview & History

Released by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991, DecapAttack is a delightfully bizarre platformer that actually began its life as Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Đại Bouken, a Japanese title tied to an anime. When Sega of America localized the game, they completely overhauled the aesthetics to create a totally unique, spooky-cute Halloween-inspired universe. Players control Chuck D. Head, a headless, mummified hero crafted by the eccentric Dr. Frankenkenny. Your mission is to traverse the underworld body parts of the supreme evil entity Max D. Cap, who has torn the world asunder. Armed with a sentient, wisecracking face mounted on his stomach—affectionately named Max—Chuck must punch, jump, and collect evil little minions known as Maxcons across surreal, fleshy, and mechanical landscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of the era, DecapAttack leans heavily into item collection and puzzle-platforming. Chuck's primary method of attack is using the screaming face on his torso to lash out with a short-range headbutt-punch. However, his most defining mechanic is his detachable head; Chuck can throw his actual skull to attack distant enemies or uncover hidden secrets, though leaving himself temporarily defenseless until it boomerangs back. Throughout each stage, players must collect special 'Skull Dolls' hidden in secret areas to unlock the boss door at the end of the zone. Chuck can also consume various potions brewed by Dr. Frankenkenny, granting temporary superhuman abilities such as high jumps, speed boosts, or invincibility. With its distinct Burtonesque art style, catchy ragtime-horror soundtrack, and eccentric enemy designs—ranging from walking alarm clocks to bouncing eyeballs—this Genesis cult classic delivers a platforming experience unlike anything else on the 16-bit console.
