Description

“Devilish” is different from other paddle games by letting you play with two paddles. The lower one behaves just like a usual paddle – you use it to prevent the ball from dropping down. The upper one can move and turn, allowing you to hit the ball from different angles and from different parts of the screen. You advance through levels by destroying bricks and enemies, going up until the level boss enemy appears.

Devilish: The Next Possession

Overview & History

Released by Sage's Epoch and published by Sage's Epoch and Sega in 1991 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Devilish: The Next Possession (known simply as Devilish in Japan) is a wildly eccentric dark-fantasy action puzzle game. Steeped in brooding occult imagery, the storyline follows a medieval prince and princess whose souls are kidnapped by a resurrected demon queen and sealed away inside a magical paddle and ball. Instead of fighting dragons directly with a sword, players must manipulate this supernatural paddle-and-sphere duo to break through demonic blockades, smiting hordes of gargoyles, skeletons, and floating spirits across eerie castle ramparts and hellish dimensions. This unique blend of traditional overhead action and Breakout-style physics set the Genesis title apart from typical side-scrolling hack-and-slashers of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay unfolds across vertically and horizontally scrolling stages split into distinct zones resembling classic block-breaking boards intertwined with standard platformer hazards. The player simultaneously controls two primary entities: the Prince, who serves as the bouncing sphere, and the Princess, manifesting as a floating shield/paddle that bounces him toward enemies. Power-ups scattered across stages allow the Prince to split into multiple balls, shoot fireballs, or gain temporary invincibility, turning standard block puzzles into frantic combat skirmishes. Boss encounters require precise angle calculations to strike vulnerable weak points hidden behind moving barriers. The game's gloomy gothic atmosphere is heightened by an eerie, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack and grotesque sprite art depicting twisted mythological beasts, demanding both razor-fast reflexes and puzzle-solving patience.
