Released in 1995 for the Sega Genesis by Playmates Interactive, Doom Troopers is a grim, run-and-gun platformer based on the cult-classic Mutant Chronicles collectible card and tabletop roleplaying universe. Tasking players with halting the dark, necrotic forces of the Dark Legion, the game captures the dystopian sci-fi horror aesthetic of its source material with dark industrial backgrounds, grotesque biomechanical enemies, and a heavy metal-inspired atmosphere. Players choose between two elite heroes—Mitch Hunter or Max Steiner—each representing different factions locked in a desperate war against planetary corruption. Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Doom Troopers is a traditional 2D side-scrolling shooter defined by its heavy reliance on ammunition management, positioning, and varied movement mechanics. Unlike typical arcade run-and-guns where players simply hold down the fire button, Mitch and Max feature distinct attributes; Mitch relies on heavy firepower, while Max leans into mobility and specialized ordinance. Levels take players from ruined metropolitanscapes to flesh-crafted organic catacombs, featuring platforming hazards, destructible environments, and relentless waves of Legionaries, necromutants, and screen-filling biomechanical bosses. Players can collect weapon upgrades, ranging from rapid-fire pulse rifles to devastating grenade launchers and flamethrowers, though managing limited ammo for advanced weapons is crucial for survival.
