Description

The year is 1928. In a distant galaxy, a monstrous entity watches and waits. Though his purposes are beyond the understanding of mankind, the mighty Hastur lives only to destroy, with the power to easily obliterate an entire planet. On Earth, he is worshiped as a god by a bizarre cult called the Hastur Group, whose evil purpose is simple: to summon Hastur to Earth, so that civilization may be wiped out and a new order begun – an order dictated by the cult of Hastur!

To summon Hastur, the cult plans to use the newly-built Empire State Building as a sacrificial shrine. The only person alive who can stop them is Annet, a young sorceress from the mountains of Peru, who has telepathically harnessed a portion of Hastur’s vast power. She controls the elements of the air, possessing the magic of El Viento…The Wind.

But the Hastur Group has enlisted the aid of the most dangerous mob of its day: the gangsters of Vincente DeMarco, New York’s supreme underworld kingpin. Your battle will be fought in the speakeasies, factories, streets and sewers of New York, against a merciless and deadly horde of thugs and assassins. Prepare yourself to wield the mind-boggling elemental power of El Viento!

El.Viento

Overview & History

Released by Wolf Team in 1991 exclusively for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, El.Viento is a wildly eccentric, fast-paced 2D action-platformer set in a fictional, steampunk-infused 1930s New York City. The narrative plays out like an occult fever dream, loosely blending historical prohibition-era gangsters (including Al Capone) with ancient Babylonian mythos. Players control Annette Majin, a magical half-demon Peruvian sorceress who must thwart a sinister cult attempting to resurrect the ancient evil deity Hastur. As the first installment in Wolf Team's unofficial "Earnest Evans" trilogy—preceding both Earnest Evans and Annet Futatabi—this title stands out for its cinematic anime-style cutscenes, bizarre tonal shifts, and a pounding, high-tempo electronic-rock soundtrack composed by Motoi Sakuraba.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

El.Viento combines frantic run-and-gun platforming with hack-and-slash melee combat. Unlike traditional Genesis action heroes, Annette moves with a fluid, acrobatic agility, capable of sprinting, executing a directional dash to evade enemy fire, and double-jumping across treacherous chasms. Her offensive arsenal features a rapid-fire boomerang for ranged attacks alongside a close-quarters knife swipe for enemies that get too near. To decimate larger hordes of mobsters and monsters, Annette can channel explosive spellcasting by collecting magical energy pickups scattered throughout the stages. The level design pushes players through a variety of surreal environments—ranging from roaring 1920s train cars and neon-lit cityscapes to subterranean ruins—culminating in chaotic, multi-tiered boss encounters that test both reflexes and spatial awareness.
