Description

After Sadler defeated the Caliph, he returned to his home village, greeted by his fellow assassins. A spy of the Crusaders has been spotted outside of the village; following his trail, Sadler encounters the powerful leader of the Knights Templar. Travelling together to different countries of the world, they try to find a mysterious holy artifact that can supposedly put an end to the religious wars.

Exile is a sequel to XZR. Like its predecessor, it is an action role-playing game with platforming elements, set in a fictionalized version of the Middle East and other world regions in 13th century. Travel and exploration occur in the traditional overhead view of RPGs, while the battles and dungeons are side-scrolling mazes, similar to Wanderers from Ys. Experience points are awarded for defeating enemies. Leveling-up automatically raises Sadler’s attributes. Sadler fights with swords and can also cast offensive and restorative spells. Weapons, armor and items can be bought and sold in towns.

Developed by Telenet Japan and localized by Working Designs in 1991, Exile for the Sega Genesis is a wild historical-sci-fi-action-RPG fusion. Players control Sadler, an undercover Christian assassin and crusader, who journeys through the 11th-century Middle East to uncover an apocalyptic drug syndicate. Known originally in Japan as *Exile: Toki no Hazama e*, the game courted mild controversy due to its heavy-handed religious references, use of historical figures like the Assassins sect and the Crusaders, and its bizarre juxtaposition of medieval combat with futuristic technology and drug-dealing plots.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard top-down RPGs of its era, Exile utilizes a split gameplay style. Exploration and dialogue happen from a top-down perspective, but dungeons and encounters instantly shift into a side-scrolling, platforming action mode. Sadler can equip various swords, heavy armor, and magical amulets found throughout dangerous fortresses. Uniquely, Sadler consumes illegal narcotics as items for temporary stat boosts or healing, which drains his "sanity" meter over time—a mechanic far ahead of its time. The game also features real-time inventory management, allowing players to swap weapons on the fly to bypass specific enemy defenses or break environmental barriers.
