Fighting Masters is an early one-on-one fighter with limited controls. Three buttons are available in the game: block, attack and jump. The D-pad cannot be used to jump directly. Instead, the player has to walk in a certain direction and then press the jump key to perform it. Although there are no combos available, the attack key offers different moves and a few special moves are available as well. Most of the fighting leads to holds from which massive damage can be inflicted by dropping the opponent or throwing him against the wall. Twelve different fighters have available. Aside from the moves, some are also faster or come with more powerful attacks. The game modes include matches for one or two players and a watch mode to view a computer-computer fight.

Released by Treco in 1991 exclusively for the Sega Genesis, Fighting Masters is a bizarre, sci-fi/fantasy fighting game set across the distant planet Zoa. The plot revolves around a brutal tournament hosted by the tyrannical alien overlord Valmour, where twelve eclectic combatants—ranging from cybernetic humanoids and gargantuan lizard-men to multi-armed demons—battle for ultimate dominance of the galaxy. While it launched during the post-Street Fighter II arcade craze, Treco’s title carved out a distinct niche through its sprawling creature designs and non-traditional presentation, utilizing a scalable perspective zoom that pushed the Genesis hardware to dynamically pull the camera back when combatants leaped into the air.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 2D fighters of its era, Fighting Masters separates itself through oversized character sprites and a unique health/stamina dynamic. Players choose from a roster of 12 distinct warriors, each boasting bizarre move-sets like Rotagen’s spinning shell attacks or Xenon’s plasma lashes. Special moves are executed via directional inputs paired with attack buttons, though the game lacks a dedicated block button, requiring players to hold away from opponents to guard. Matches are notoriously fast-paced and punishing, forcing players to master the erratic jump arcs and screen-scrolling mechanics to succeed.
