Your task in this arcade conversion is to guide a frog across a treacherous road and river, and to safety at the top of the screen. Both these sections are fraught with a variety of hazards, each of which will kill the frog and cost you a life if contact is made.

The road is full of cars and trucks, at variable speeds. The river water itself is fatal, as are the snakes which hover within on later levels. Frogger must use the arrangement of logs, turtles (which are only there for a short time) and alligators (but stay away form their faces), and then jump into one of the open home-cells, ideally one containing a fly for extra points. Once all holes have been filled, you move onto the next, harder, level.

Released in 1997 by Majesco Sales for the Sega Genesis, this version of *Frogger* breathes new life into Konami's classic 1981 arcade hit. Though late in the Genesis life cycle, this port stands out by discarding the simplistic 2D top-down perspective in favor of vibrant, pre-rendered 3D-style sprites, dynamic multi-tiered scrolling, and entirely new exploratory worlds beyond the traditional asphalt and riverbanks. The minimalist narrative remains intact yet expanded: a hapless amphibian must navigate increasingly treacherous environments to rescue captive female frogs and safely guide them home within a strict countdown timer.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game expands far beyond the single-screen arcade original into a full-scale adventure featuring diverse themed worlds, ranging from ancient ruins and volcanic caves to urban construction zones. Players must master precise grid-based movement across rapidly shifting obstacles. The core mechanics require hopping across speeding vehicles, leaping onto erratic logs and diving turtles, and timing jumps to avoid predatory snakes, alligators, and snapping fish. Collecting rare insects grants bonus points and temporary power-ups, while rescuing lost baby frogs yields vital score multipliers. Lives are precious, and every misstep results in either a squish, a splash, or running out of time, making mastery of momentum and environmental rhythm absolute requirements for survival.
