Description

Mother Earth has been turned into an environmental wasteland by careless humans. Now, the human race has one last chance to save the Earth… With your help.

The United Star Cluster of Leezaluth, the governing empire of the Galaxy, has sent a warning to the Earth: “To any surviving Humans – An intergalactic terrorist group known as Gulfer is planning to invade your planet and use your polluted waste to build weapons. You Humans must stop Gulfer, or we will be forced to supernova your Sun and destroy the Earth to stop them. But if you can stop Gulfer, we will give you a new planet like Earth to live on.”

Unfortunately, Earth can no longer afford to maintain a standing army or military. But there is still one brave hero willing to fight for the survival of Earth. He is Dan Dare, a young ace-pilot. Alexis, the messenger from Leezaluth, was awed by Dan’s fighting spirit and decided to stay with him. She modified Dan’s spacecraft and is now the navigator of the TOZ weapon system on Dan’s ship.

The last epic struggle for the survival of the Human Race and Mother Earth has just begun… All our fates rest in your hands.

Gaiares

Overview & History

Released by Telenet Japan and published by Renovation Products in 1990 for the Sega Genesis, Gaiares is a quintessential side-scrolling shoot-'em-up wrapped in an apocalyptic sci-fi narrative. Earth has been reduced to a toxic galactic garbage dump by the corrupt Zoul empire, who are harvesting the planet's remaining core energy. To prevent total planetary annihilation, a rebel resistance fighter named Lel arrives in a bio-mechanical fighter craft called the GuldAM, alongside pilot Amy. Together, they bring a technological revolution to the genre that set this 16-bit cartridge apart from its arcade contemporaries.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup formulas where players rely solely on traditional power-ups, Gaiares introduces the revolutionary "Weapon Copy System" via the ROBO (Remote Option Bit Organism) device. Players can capture enemy ships using this tethered weapon pod and steal their specific armaments, upgrading them through continuous absorption of identical enemy types. Across its seven stages, the game demands absolute mastery of weapon loadouts, ranging from spreading lasers to massive homing missiles. Navigating dense asteroid fields and labyrinthine alien bases requires quick thinking, as the screen teems with organic and mechanical monstrosities, culminating in colossal boss encounters set to a stellar synth-rock soundtrack.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the GuldAM fighter
  • Action Keys: A (Fire Weapon), B (Launch ROBO / Capture Enemy Weapon), C (Option Formation / Speed Adjust)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
