Ghostbusters

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1990 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, this adaptation of the supernatural film franchise stands apart from its 8-bit counterparts. Developed by Compile, the game abandons the frustrating overhead driving segments of earlier versions in favor of a vibrant, side-scrolling action platformer. Set in New York City, the storyline kicks off after a massive surge in paranormal activity orchestrated by the malevolent spirit Gozer and the rogue deity Vigo the Carpathian. Players choose one of the iconic paranormal investigators—Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, or Winston Zeddemore—each outfitted with their signature Proton Pack. The game takes you from haunted streets and creepy sewers to the final showdown atop a towering skyscraper, delivering a nostalgic 16-bit experience defined by catchy chiptune renditions of Ray Parker Jr.'s legendary theme song.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay shifts dynamically between action-packed platforming levels and strategic shop management. Between stages, players must collect ghost-busting cash dropped by defeated ghouls to purchase vital equipment upgrades, such as stronger particle throwers, smart bombs, extra health, and specialized traps. During the stages, characters navigate treacherous environments, jumping across platforms and blasting an array of ghoulish apparitions. Unlike standard beat-'em-ups, capturing tougher ghosts requires a two-step tactical approach: players must first weaken the entity with their proton beam before successfully deploying a ghost trap to suck the wriggling specter inside. Boss encounters demand precise timing and dodging, utilizing the unique traversal and firing capabilities of the chosen Ghostbuster.
