Description

Hercules is aiming to achieve immortality by completing the task the Gods have set him. His task is presented as a platform adventure set in ancient Greece, featuring a variety of enemies as you play it through.

Of more significance, however, is the game’s Artificial Intelligence system, in which creatures monitor how you play, and try to find safer positions. Also, the game offers more bonuses and power-ups if you’re struggling to progress. Even without those, there are lots of bonus sections to find and unlock.

Gods

Overview & History

Released by The Bitmap Brothers in 1992 and ported to the Sega Genesis by Ace Software, *Gods* is a dark, atmospheric mythological platformer. Players assume the role of Hercules, a nameless warrior striving to prove his worth to the pantheon and attain immortality by reclaiming the Citadel of the Gods from grotesque, parasitic creatures known as the Four Guardians. Unlike the bright, fast-paced platformers saturating the 16-bit era, *Gods* relies on a moody, industrial-fantasy aesthetic paired with a haunting chiptune soundtrack by John Fox. Though originally an Amiga title, the Genesis version translates its deliberate, methodical pacing and distinct chunky pixel art to Sega's console.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay in *Gods* is less about mindless jumping and more about tactical puzzle-solving, item management, and combat precision. Across four sprawling, vertically and horizontally scrolling worlds, you must manipulate switches, push blocks, collect gold, and purchase upgrades from hidden shops using a sophisticated in-game merchant system. The enemies feature adaptive artificial intelligence, reacting directly to your positioning and attacks, which forces players to memorize enemy spawn points and environmental hazards. You begin with a basic dagger, but can collect and upgrade a devastating arsenal including axes, fireballs, and multi-directional spears, alongside magical items that grant flight, invulnerability, or summon devastating screen-clearing lightning strikes.
