Description

The Super Strategic Defense Initiative of the 1990’s banned inter-continental ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads. Now the year is 2016. Weapons today are limited to super strategic mobile weapons. Enter Granada. Hypertek-Cannon Tank. (HCT).

Firepower as we know it today is all but abandoned with Granada. Granada uses shield and radar to create its defense mechanism. Offensive firepower is provided by the most awesome array of weaponry ever assembled on a battlefield. These include multi-directional interceptors, long-range homing missiles, and a device designed to totally obliterate all opposing forces.

You will command Granada through the peaceful streets of Tobora. Battle the giant flying battleship Astarsha, and Valsic, another HCT.

Granada

Overview & History

Developed and published by Wolf Team in 1990 for the Sega Genesis—and later ported to the Sharp X68000—*Granada* is a sci-fi multidirectional scrolling shooter that stands out from typical run-and-gun titles through its distinct tactical pacing. Set in the distant future of the 23rd century, the storyline drops players onto the remote, heavily fortified mining planet of Cruz, which has been seized by a rogue artificial intelligence and its mechanized armies. You pilot the "Granada," an advanced, highly maneuverable hover-tank designed specifically to infiltrate enemy installations and dismantle the central supercomputer. Unlike standard side-scrolling shoot-'em-ups of the 16-bit era, *Granada* offers a sprawling, maze-like environment where spatial awareness, map memorization, and precise positioning are paramount to survival.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Granada’s core mechanic revolves around independent turret control, setting it apart from contemporaries like *Target Earth*. While the tank moves continuously across the terrain, players can lock their firing direction using designated shoulder or attack buttons, allowing the Granada to retreat while laying down a constant wall of suppression fire. The tank is equipped with an upgradable primary laser and a special smart-bomb attack that clears the screen of incoming projectiles and minor units. Progression is split across varied terrain types—ranging from claustrophobic subterranean bunkers to open-air desert fortresses—where you must rescue trapped colonists and hunt down rogue sub-bosses. The haunting, synthesized heavy-metal soundtrack complements the frantic, strategic action, creating an intense, atmospheric 16-bit warfare experience that rewards calculated aggression over blind reflex.
