Description

You are taking on the simulated proving grounds, which are split into two styles of alternating action. In the first you must progress (initially purely horizontally, though later with vertical flick-scrolling as well) through a hostile environment of enemies, bombs and traps, gaining points for doing it quickly and with lots of energy left. Initially you can fly and kick as needed.

Once this section is complete, you move on to one-on-one combat of the Street Fighter 2 style. The early foes have far less energy than you begin with. As you progress through the game, you are awarded extra attacking moves, in a manner similar to Brutal: Paws of Fury

Heavy Nova

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by Micronet for the Sega Genesis, Heavy Nova is a sci-fi cinematic fighting game that attempted to blend side-scrolling platforming with 1D mecha combat. Set in a dystopian future where humanity has depleted Earth's resources, the remaining population lives in the massive orbital space colony Nova. To determine the ultimate guardian of this floating metropolis, the government institutes the Heavy Nova project—a lethal tournament featuring experimental, heavily armed bipedal battle suits. Despite its ambitious premise and striking cyberpunk aesthetic, the game received a polarized reception upon release due to its punishing difficulty curve, stiff animation, and unconventional pacing. Over time, it has evolved into a fascinating, highly polarizing cult classic of the 16-bit era, celebrated by retro enthusiasts for its unique genre-blending vision.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Heavy Nova breaks away from standard fighting game conventions by splitting its gameplay into two distinct phases. Players must first navigate side-scrolling, maze-like stages within a strict time limit, dodging environmental hazards, jumping across platforms, and fighting off rogue security drones. Successfully reaching the end of a stage initiates a one-on-one cinematic duel against a rival mecha. Combat is heavily focused on tactical positioning and meter management rather than frantic button-mashing. Players pilot customizable armored exoskeletons—such as the agile H-1 or the powerhouse heavy units—each boasting distinct energy reserves and weapons. Attacks include rapid-fire laser volleys, heavy hydraulic melee strikes, and devastating rocket barrages. However, executing special moves depletes your primary power core, meaning reckless offense instantly leaves your machine vulnerable to catastrophic shutdown, forcing players to master a careful rhythm of advance, retreat, and tactical cooldowns.
