Description

Havoc is a young traveler and treasure hunter, who roams the seas with his shipmate Tide. One day, he finds an unconscious girl on the seashore. She tells Havoc that her name is Bridget, and she has a treasure map that leads to the location of Emeralda, the legendary treasure with unique power. But the evil pirate Bernardo has kidnapped Bridget and Tide, and stolen the treasure map. Havoc has to rescue his friends and to get the map back.

High Seas Havoc is an action platformer. Havoc can roll, jump, and attack enemies while jumping – or hit them by simply jumping on their heads. He can also collect various items and open treasure chests on the way.

Released by Data East in 1993 for the Sega Genesis—and known as Captin Havoc in Japan—High Seas Havoc is a vibrant, fast-paced 16-bit platformer that stands out in the console's crowded library. The storyline follows Havoc, a courageous and agile seal-like creature, and his sidekick Tide, as they embark on a swashbuckling quest to stop the villainous Bernard the Mad and his pirate crew. Bernard is hunting for the magical gemstone known as the Emerald Spark, and it is up to Havoc to navigate treacherous tropical islands, pirate galleys, and icy caverns to recover it. Despite receiving praise for its colorful sprite work, catchy calypso-infused soundtrack, and unique aquatic-themed aesthetic, the game flew somewhat under the radar, ultimately becoming a sought-after cult classic for retro collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

High Seas Havoc combines traditional run-and-jump platforming with a distinct momentum-based physics engine. Unlike standard platforming heroes, Havoc relies on a signature rolling dash attack that lets him tear through enemies, break obstacles, and zip up steep slopes akin to Sega's own Sonic the Hedgehog, though with a heavier emphasis on combat. Players must master a mix of standard claw swipes, mid-air spinning attacks, and the devastating rolling dash to defeat distinct bosses at the end of each stage. The game features diverse level design, transitioning from sun-drenched beaches and underground mines to vertical climbing sequences and underwater swimming segments where the control physics shift dynamically. Power-ups are scattered throughout destructible chests, offering temporary invincibility, extra health points, and bonus scoring items.
