Description

Story:

In the mood to punch, kick and knock the daylights out of a bunch of wicked thugs? If the answer’s “Yes”, be prepared to receive your own fair share of hard knocks, because these goons are tough.

And you’ll need brains as well as brawn since an intricate maze of passages leads you closer and closer to victory. Passages which you’ll have to find.

You’re Aarzak, a renegade with a dream to free your people from a life of oppression. A master of Jet-Kwon-Do, the most elite practice of the martial arts; you’re about to experience hand-to-hand combat that never lets up. You’re swift, you’re lethal, you’re good.

But are you good enough to outsmart layers of labyrinths; battalions of beasts; and scores of setbacks? Are you good enough to survive the Last Battle?

Development History:

In Japan the game was known as Hokuto No Ken and was adapted from the manga of the same name. It was developed by Tatsuo Matsuda and Hiroshi Momota. For a western release the blood, gore, and mature themes were removed and story changed. Additionally, the colors were changed to hide the association of the game to the violent Japanese series. However, it was not as dramatically changed as Hokuto No Ken for the Master System, which became severely watered-down as “Black Belt”.

Last Battle

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 for the Genesis, Last Battle serves as the localized adaptation of the cult-classic anime and manga Fist of the North Star. Due to licensing restrictions in the West, Sega stripped away the iconic bloody gore and renamed the protagonist Kenshiro to Aarzak, alongside altering various character names to distance the game from its source material. Despite these changes, the post-apocalyptic wasteland aesthetic remains intact. Players control Aarzak on a solitary crusade across desolate landscapes dominated by grotesque mutants, rival martial artists, and warlords, all in a desperate bid to rescue his kidnapped companion and restore peace to a broken world.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat 'em-ups of its era, Last Battle uniquely shifts perspectives between a traditional 2D side-scrolling action stage and a pseudo-3D, over-the-shoulder perspective during specific boss encounters or transition zones. Aarzak's primary offensive output relies on rapid-fire punches and flying kicks, capable of decimating rank-and-file thugs. As players progress and collect power-up items, Aarzak's muscle mass expands dramatically, temporarily transforming him into a glowing, hyper-powered state reminiscent of the anime's signature Super-State, allowing him to obliterate enemies with single strikes. The game is notoriously difficult, featuring relentless enemy respawns, perilous environmental hazards, and demanding platforming sequences that require precise timing over bottomless pits and crumbling bridges.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Aarzak left/right, duck, and look up
