Description

Italian-born Mario Andretti is one of the most successful racing drivers in the US scene, and five of his relatives have also raced professionally. This game allows you to sample Indy cars, stock cars and sprint cars, all of which have been graced by Andrettis. The physics are customized to each of these, so expect sprint cars to slide around on the dirt tracks, and the slipstream effect is detectable.

There are 27 computer-controlled cars with individual profiles, and 8 cars to choose from in each race, with varying engine, grip, brakes and pit crew standards. You can view the action either from behind the car, or from the nose. In longer races you must monitor the pit strategy, with the options of a splash ‘n’ dash stop if your tires are still fine.

Mario Andretti Racing

Overview & History

Released in 1994 by EA Sports for the Sega Genesis, Mario Andretti Racing attempts to capture the high-octane thrills of motorsports endorsed by the legendary racing icon himself. Developed during a time when 16-bit systems were pushing their hardware limits to render pseudo-3D environments, this title distinguishes itself by offering three distinct racing disciplines in a single cartridge: Indy cars, stock cars, and modified dirt track racing. Unlike standard arcade racers of the era, it leans heavily into a semi-simulation style, complete with pre-race qualifying sessions, pit stop strategies, and realistic vehicle damage mechanics that affect handling and top speed on the asphalt and dirt ovals.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players begin their career in the Championship mode, starting out in the gritty, sliding chaos of dirt track racing before graduating to heavy-hitting stock cars and ultimately the blisteringly fast, open-wheel Indy cars. The game utilizes a rear-view, pseudo-3D perspective that scales sprites to simulate depth and speed. Handling is remarkably nuanced for the Genesis; cornering requires proper braking technique and racing lines, as oversteering sends your vehicle spinning into the concrete retaining walls. Pit stops add a layer of tactical depth, forcing players to manage tire wear and fuel consumption over grueling lap counts. The inclusion of split-screen multiplayer allows for head-to-head racing, making it a competitive showcase for Sega's console.
