Description

Terrorists have their job and you’ve got yours: CRUSH ‘EM ALL! They’ve kidnapped a former President, and the MERCS are going in for the rescue.

Punch through their coastal defenses, snatch enemy weapons and gain firepower. Pick up machine guns, bazookas and heavy artillery as you advance through the smoke of burning metal. Power up a flamethrower, and good-bye, Charlie!

Push through a non-stop barrage of lead, grenades, heat-seeking missiles and attack choppers. Hijack tanks and gunboats. Shred ’em with your own weapons. They messed with your country – now you’re gonna make ’em scream!

Mercs

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1990 and expertly ported to the Sega Genesis by Victor Musical Industries in 1991, Mercs is the quintessential run-and-gun arcade conversion. The storyline thrusts elite paramilitary operatives Joseph, Howard, and Thomas into a desperate rescue mission deep within the hostile republic of Zangaria to liberate a captured former President. Originally conceived as a spiritual successor to Commando, the Genesis version enhances the 16-bit library by introducing two distinct modes: the faithful Arcade Mode and the exclusive, expansive Original Mode, which adds shop mechanics, branching paths, and a rotating roster of playable mercenaries.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mercs delivers relentless top-down vertical and horizontal scrolling action across six intense stages, ranging from dense jungles and fortified enemy bases to a high-stakes battleship escape. Players wield a standard-issue assault rifle alongside powerful collectible weaponry such as flamethrowers, bazookas, and spread-shot guns. A defining mechanic is the health and special-weapon economy; collecting specific items empowers your firearm temporarily, while devastating smart-bomb air strikes can be triggered to clear the entire screen of encroaching tanks, heavily armored grunts, and turret emplacements. The Genesis port also includes cooperative two-player simultaneous action, heightening the tactical chaos.
