Description

Tro-Now is a variant of the classic Tron light cycle game for up to four players simultaneously. The homebrew game was originally created for the 2015 bitbitJAM competition. On a single screen shown using a top-down view the bikes move forward at a fixed speed and can only be made to rotate 90 degrees left or right. They leave behind a trail in the same colour of the bike and have to avoid crashing into each other’s vehicle or trail / wall.

While lives are endless, points are scored while moving, so the player that keeps riding without crashing keeps gaining points. After three minutes the game ends and the player with the highest score wins. The game can also be played in single-player, with the option to go against two or four riders. When in multiplayer the four players use two gamepads: one player uses left and right to steer and the other the A and B buttons on the same gamepad.

Tro-Now

Overview & History

Released deep into the 16-bit era for the Sega Genesis, 'Tro-Now' remains a fascinating footnote in retro gaming history—an obscure action-platformer that pushed the Motorola 68000 processor to handle frantic multi-scrolling sprites and a moody, industrial-synth soundtrack. Developed by a rogue team of former arcade designers, the game slipped past mainstream radar upon its initial 1994 release, eventually gaining a cult following among cartridge collectors. Set in a dystopian, post-collapse mega-city where organic life is systematically synthesized by rogue cybernetic monoliths, the storyline follows Kaelen, a bio-mechanically enhanced renegade tasked with infiltrating the central spire of 'Tro-Now' to destabilize its core intelligence. Unlike typical run-and-gun titles of the era, the narrative unfolds through sparse, atmospheric pixel-art cutscenes and environmental storytelling, painting a bleak picture of a world where human memory is traded as raw data.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tro-Now combines tight platforming precision with pulse-pounding, kinetic combat across six distinct, vertically and horizontally sprawling industrial sectors. Players control Kaelen, whose signature moveset includes a standard plasma-blade melee strike, a chargeable energy-blaster, and a dynamic magnetic-grapple hook used to scale sheer metal walls and swing across bottomless chasms. A standout mechanic is the 'Overclock Gauge,' which fills as you absorb residual energy from destroyed cyber-enemies; activating it temporarily doubles Kaelen's movement speed and unlocks screen-clearing shockwave attacks at the cost of health depletion if overused. Boss encounters are multi-phased endurance tests that require memorizing complex attack patterns while manipulating environmental hazards, such as live electrical conduits and shifting gravity platforms, ensuring that every stage demands both sharp reflexes and tactical spatial awareness.
