This video game is similar to the previous, NFL Football ’94 Starring Joe Montana, except in this version, there is no play by play commentary, the lineups of the football teams are updated to reflect the 1994 NFL season, and there are more plays for the player’s football team to perform on offense and defense. Once again, Joe Montana appears on the title screen.

The game contains a standard Exhibition mode as well as a Season mode where players can manipulate trades, sign free agents and store records for up to seven different users thanks to the games battery backup system, which was also used to track league leaders in thirteen different categories.

Released by Sega in the fall of 1994 exclusively for the 16-bit Genesis, NFL '95 served as the ultimate refinement of Sega Sports' pre-ESPN football engine before the franchise leaped into the 32-bit era. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of its predecessor, this iteration arrived with updated 1994-95 season rosters, enhanced artificial intelligence, and newly integrated player stats that accurately reflected the real-world dominance of legends like Emmitt Smith and Steve Young. Though it lacked a formal narrative storyline, the game captured the fierce competitive spirit of the gridiron, allowing players to rewrite playoff brackets and chase the Lombardi Trophy across multiple competitive modes, including full season play and sudden-death playoff showdowns.

NFL '95 distinguishes itself on the Genesis through a lightning-fast pseudo-3D perspective and crisp sprite scaling that creates an impressive sense of depth during deep passing plays. The playbook system is surprisingly deep for a 16-bit title, offering classic offensive formations like the Run & Shoot and West Coast offense, alongside aggressive defensive packages such as the nickel and dime.
