Description

Normy is one popular surfer, especially with the ladies on the beach, however one day a UFO appears and kidnaps all the ladies on the beach and it is up to Normy to travel to 29 different alien worlds to bring them back to Earth. The gameplay is a side-scrolling action game, controlling Normy and fighting off various bad guys scattered throughout the stage using weapons such as glove extending hammers or beaver mallets. There are also puzzles that need to be solved at times to advance on, various pitfalls and traps to avoid, and six different bosses to fight.

Normy's Beach Babe-O-Rama

Overview & History

Released in 1994 by Tradewest for the Sega Genesis, Normy's Beach Babe-O-Rama is a bizarre, cartoonish platformer developed by Realtime Associates. The game follows the misadventures of Normy, an ordinary slacker who stumbles upon a glowing, mystical surfboard. Transported through a bizarre time-space warp, Normy finds himself hurled across history into various hostile eras—from prehistoric jungles and medieval castles to pirate-infested seas and futuristic dystopias. His ultimate mission is not just to survive these hazardous, anachronistic realms, but to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend and secure the ultimate beach vacation. Despite its vibrant, Saturday-morning cartoon aesthetic and humorous animations, the game gained a reputation in the 16-bit era for its unforgiving, trial-and-error difficulty, requiring precise platforming mastery and quick reflexes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Normy navigates side-scrolling environments armed with his trusty surfboard, which doubles as both a melee weapon and a dynamic traversal tool. Players must contend with quirky, era-specific enemies ranging from club-wielding cavemen to laser-shooting robots. Normy's core moveset includes swinging the surfboard like a bat, throwing it as a ranged projectile, and using it to glide across treacherous gaps. Collecting sunglasses scattered throughout the levels replenishes Normy's health meter, while various magical items grant temporary power-ups. The level design heavily incorporates environmental hazards like bottomless pits, rolling boulders, and shifting lava platforms, forcing players to memorize enemy spawn points and obstacle timings to progress through the game's wildly imaginative historical epochs.
