However, even the mightiest army fears a “Fanatic”, a solitary warrior who lives to fight and conquer and is remembered according to the number of his victories and the greatness of his deeds. You are one such Fanatic, a magical warrior with the strength of an army and the might of a thousand men. Now is your chance to achieve fame and glory for yourself in the battle-scarred land of Gargore. Defeat the ravaging hordes of monsters, conquer the world and bring peace to the warring kingdoms. Good luck – it won’t be easy!

Onslaught

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1993 for the Mega Drive by Renovation Products, Onslaught (known in Japanese as *Kyuukyoku Sentai Dadandarn*) is a bizarre, fast-paced action platformer steeped in 90s sci-fi anime aesthetics. The storyline thrusts players into a desperate planetary defense against an invading armada of biomechanical monstrosities and rogue artificial intelligences. Unlike traditional linear side-scrollers, Onslaught mixes frantic run-and-gun shooting with frantic melee combat across vertically and horizontally scrolling industrial stages. Its late-generation Genesis release means it squeezes impressive sprite-scaling and colorful, dystopian pixel art out of Motorola 68000 hardware, though it remains a cult-classic hidden gem due to its limited Western presence.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players choose from a roster of distinct pilots, each operating heavy mechanized armor equipped with unique arsenals. The gameplay core relies on alternating between high-mobility dashing, projectile suppression, and devastating close-quarters special attacks. Unlike standard platformers, maintaining a combo meter by relentlessly chaining melee strikes and plasma shots grants temporary invulnerability windows and clears screen-filling bullet hell threats. Boss encounters are massive, multi-tiered ordeals that require precise pattern memorization, utilizing destructible environment elements and mid-air dodging mechanics to survive.
