Overview & History

Released by Mindscape in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Outlander is a gritty, post-apocalyptic action-RPG loosely inspired by the 1981 film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. You play as a lone survivor known as the Outlander, thrust into a desolate wasteland after a global cataclysm caused by a meteor impact. Tasked with navigating treacherous desert highways and dystopian settlements, your primary mission is to hunt down the ruthless leader of the notorious Slavers gang who destroyed your home, while managing scarce fuel, food, and water to survive the unforgiving wasteland.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game uniquely splits its gameplay into two distinct perspectives. The overworld segments play out from an overhead, pseudo-3D vehicular combat perspective reminiscent of Spy Hunter. Here, players must pilot a heavily armed dune buggy across scrolling desert highways, dodging mines, ramming rival biker gangs, and blasting pursuers with roof-mounted machine guns while carefully monitoring fuel consumption and vehicle damage. If your car breaks down or you choose to enter specific locations, the game transitions into a traditional 2D side-scrolling platformer. In these on-foot areas, the Outlander can jump, climb ladders, and engage in frantic melee and ranged combat against wasteland mutants, thugs, and heavily armored bosses using a shotgun, crossbow, or a trusty iron pipe. Survival requires scavenging for supplies, trading with friendly NPCs in settlement towns, and keeping a watchful eye on your health and ammunition meters.
