Description

The basic Outrun game structure is reused in this, with the main difference being that a futuristic setting has been used. The circuits have some spectacular inclines, and the cars do nearly 700km/h. There are four different track sequences on offer, and your aim is to complete each section of track within the time limit. As in the original OutRun game, near the end of each stage there are forks in the road, allowing you to choose different routes within the track sequences. There are other cars on the road to avoid as well.

OutRun 2019

Overview & History

Released in 1993 by SIMS and published by Sega exclusively for the Mega Drive/Genesis, OutRun 2019 reimagines Yu Suzuki's classic arcade racer in a distant, futuristic setting. Abandoning the sunny coastal highways of the 1986 original, this pseudo-sequel drops players into a high-speed sci-fi dystopia filled with hyper-elevated magnetic skyways, neon-drenched futuristic cities, and treacherous mountain passes. While initially conceived as a direct continuation of the arcade pedigree, the Genesis version carved out its own niche by emphasizing futuristic aesthetic choices, a heavy synthetic soundtrack, and blistering hardware-pushed scaling effects that tested the limits of Sega's 16-bit console.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard arcade racers of its era, OutRun 2019 introduces a revolutionary two-gear manual or automatic transmission system coupled with a dedicated rocket-boost mechanic. Players pilot a futuristic, high-tech roadster capable of achieving astronomical velocities, necessitating split-second reflexes to navigate branching pathways before the strict countdown timer hits zero. A standout mechanical addition is the inclusion of traffic-weaving physics that reward close calls with speed boosts, alongside dangerous jumps over chasms and hazardous terrain. The game features four distinct stages—each split into branching routes—pushing the Genesis graphics engine to render scaling roadside objects at blistering framerates, simulating a true sense of forward momentum in a cybernetic future.
