PAPERBOY. The arcade hit that really delivers!

Ride your trusty bike – loaded with tightly rolled newspapers – through a comical, ever-changing neighborhood. Score big points by tossing papers into subscribers’ mailboxes and porches. Don’t miss, ’cause you’ll lose a customer for every bad throw. Now, for the real fun: score even bigger points by bombarding nonsubscribers’ homes, taking out their windows, lamps and statues! But watch out for bad drivers, skate-boarders, remote control cars and lots of other obstacles. They can ruin your day real fast. After work, take on the Training Course, a BMX-style bonus round that’ll test your aim and riding skills to the max!

Paperboy

Overview & History

Originally a coin-op arcade sensation featuring bicycle-handlebar controls, Tengen’s 1991 port of Paperboy for the Sega Genesis brought the manic suburban delivery route straight to home consoles. While Atari developed the original arcade hit, Tengen handled this Genesis rendition, injecting vibrant 16-bit color palettes and distinct isometric perspectives. Unlike the Nintendo Entertainment System version, the Genesis release captures a sharper, more arcade-accurate aesthetic, chronicling the daily grind of an ambitious youth navigating Suburbia. Players pedal through a grueling seven-day work week, where dodging break-dancing kids, runaway tires, and rogue pets is just part of keeping your subscribers happy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

You control the titular paperboy on an unyielding, automatically scrolling BMX bike across Easy Street, Middle Street, and Hard Street. The primary objective is delivering newspapers to yellow-highlighted subscriber houses while avoiding non-subscribers and environmental hazards. Miss too many deliveries or lose all your subscribers, and you lose your job. Armed with a finite stash of rolled-up newspapers, you must aggressively hurl them at open mailboxes, front porches, or—if feeling malicious—smash the windows of non-subscribers to rack up bonus points. Along the way, navigating obstacles like skateboarders, erratic lawnmowers, grim reapers, and tornadoes requires precise positioning. Successfully surviving a day grants access to an obstacle-course training track, where successfully hitting stunt ramps and targets earns extra lives before the next brutal shift begins.
