That’s right, you’ve now got houses on both sides of the street – which means even more customers’ homes to deliver papers to and non subscribers’ homes to damage. It also means you’ve got to watch out for lots more obstacles and meanies that are out to knock you off your bike! Wreak mischief across the town or do good deeds like saving the baby and stopping the burglar. At the end of the day, hone your skills on the all-new BMX-style test course. Add the new awesome graphics, and you’re in for a rip roaring time on your bike!

Overview & History

Released by Mindscape in 1992 for the Sega Genesis, Paperboy 2 expands upon Atari's iconic arcade classic by introducing a refined suburban landscape and crucial narrative choices. While the original game limited players to a nameless suburban courier, this sequel introduces the choice between a male paperboy or a female papergirl, striving to maintain a stellar delivery record over a chaotic seven-day work week. Set across vastly expanded neighborhoods filled with belligerent pedestrians, runaway skateboards, and hazardous construction zones, the game adds a Cooperative two-player mode, allowing siblings to divvy up the left and right sides of the treacherous street. The Genesis port captures the colorful, chunky 16-bit aesthetic and bouncy chiptune soundtrack of the era, elevating the frantic difficulty of dodging angry homeowners and rogue pets while ensuring every subscriber gets their morning broadsheet.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Paperboy 2 refines the isometric scrolling perspective of its predecessor. You automatically pedal forward at a constant speed, requiring players to constantly brake or accelerate to time their throws. Your primary objective is twofold: successfully toss rolled newspapers into mailboxes or onto front porches to earn subscribers, while simultaneously vandalizing the properties of non-subscribers with well-placed missile-like throws. Bonus points and lost subscribers are recovered through the infamous obstacle course training level at the end of each in-game day. Hazards are far more aggressive this time around, ranging from marching bands and runaway baby carriages to ghosts in the graveyard level, demanding pinpoint reflexes and memorization of enemy spawn patterns.
