In this game you take on the role of 1 out of 8 teams who represent various nations vying to become the Powerball champions. Powerball is a game consisting of a hybrid of sports such as American football, soccer and rugby. You play on an 100 yard field trying to score on the opposing team. Scoring consists of either running into your opponent’s end zone holding the powerball for a touchdown or kicking the ball into your opponent’s net to score a goal. Goals are worth 1 point, and touchdowns are worth 3 points. The game modes are 1 or 2 player exhibition play, and 1 or 2 player league play. League play allows you to use bonus points, and distribute them to your teammates to improve their statistics.

Overview & History

Developed by Namco and published for the Sega Genesis in 1991, Powerball is a criminally underrated, futuristic sports-action hybrid set in the grim year of 2091. Shifting away from traditional Sega sports titles, this cyberpunk gladiator sim plunges players into brutal, televised arena matches where two opposing teams fight tooth and nail to slam a glowing energy sphere into the opponent's goal. Although it flew under the radar upon its original release due to stiff competition in the Genesis library, it has since gained a cult following for its uncompromising blend of fast-paced handball mechanics and beat-'em-up violence. Unlike generic sports games of the era, Powerball features no referees, allowing players to relentlessly punch, slide, and tackle opposing cyborg-enhanced athletes just as much as they focus on scoring goals.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Matches in Powerball play out from an overhead perspective, forcing players to master both spatial awareness and rapid directional passing. The primary objective is to grab the titular glowing sphere, navigate past aggressive defenders, and hurl it into the glowing vertical target at the far end of the arena. However, possessing the ball leaves your runner vulnerable, forcing teammates to run interference by executing bone-crushing tackles and martial arts strikes. Players can choose from diverse international teams, each boasting unique stat distributions in speed, tackling power, and throwing accuracy. The arenas themselves are filled with hazardous zones and bouncing pads that add a chaotic pinball-like dynamic to every possession. Mastering the rebound angles and timing your turbo-boost dashes is essential for breaking through the opponent's defensive wall.
