Description

Players guide Lt. Mike Harrigan as he tracks the Predator through seven levels based on the film. Mike’s primary concerns are the hostages held around the levels, and the legions of gang members out for blood. He also has to contend with the Predator, both as a boss at the end of each level, and as a time limit – if the player takes too long to rescue a hostage, the Predator will blast the hostage with his tri-laser.

Predator 2

Overview & History

Released by Teeny Weeny Games and published by Arena Entertainment in 1992, Predator 2 for the Sega Genesis is a gritty, top-down and pseudo-isometric adaptation of the 1990 sci-fi action film. Departing from the side-scrolling conventions of the 8-bit versions, this 16-bit iteration casts players as Lieutenant Mike Harrigan of the LAPD. Tasked with navigating the blistering, war-torn streets of a futuristic Los Angeles consumed by a brutal drug war and a blistering heatwave, Harrigan must rescue civilian hostages while hunting down the elusive City Hunter. The game captures the grim, dystopian atmosphere of the movie through its urban combat zones, spanning gang-infested slums, a rain-slicked meatpacking plant, and the alien spacecraft finale.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun titles, Predator 2 emphasizes tactical urban warfare and hostage extraction. Players navigate labyrinthine environments viewed from an overhead perspective, managing a limited ammunition supply and health meters. Harrigan’s arsenal upgrades as he progresses, transitioning from a standard-issue sidearm to shotguns, smart guns, and net launchers necessary for crowd control against heavily armed cartel members and crazed gang factions. Hidden hostages are scattered throughout each level and must be freed to secure bonus points and extra lives. The tension peaks during boss encounters against rival gang kingpins and, ultimately, the invisible, thermal-vision-wielding Predator itself, requiring players to anticipate stealth attacks and utilize environmental cover to survive the extraterrestrial onslaught.
