Overview & History

Released by Atari Games as an arcade phenomenon in 1990, Rampart made its way to the Sega Genesis in 1992, courtesy of Tengen. While the Genesis port lost the iconic three-player trackball setup of the cabinet, it successfully translated the frantic hybrid of strategy and artillery combat into a comfortable couch experience. The loose "storyline" casts players as medieval lords defending their coastal castles against invading fleets of naval warships, sailing galleons, and dragon-like sea monsters. Across multiple rounds, you must survive naval bombardments, repair your stone walls, and maintain cannon placements to withstand increasingly aggressive naval blockades across various strategic maps.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rampart operates on a unique, high-pressure three-phase loop: the Naval Phase, the Building Phase, and the Repair Phase. During the Naval Phase, you manually aim and fire a static cannon (or multiple unlocked guns) to blow enemy ships out of the water before they land troops or demolish your fortifications. In the Building (or Tetris-like Puzzle) Phase, a random assortment of oddly shaped stone wall pieces drops from the top of the screen. You must rotate and fit these blocks to enclose at least one castle keep while surrounding your cannons. Any cannons left outside the repaired walls are permanently lost. As you progress, you can upgrade standard cannons to faster-firing mortars or devastating multi-shot batteries, adding tactical depth to where you position your defenses against the relentless waves of red and blue enemy armadas.
