Released by Atari Games in arcade halls before screeching onto the Sega Genesis in 1991 via Tengen, RoadBlasters is a high-octane blend of vehicular combat and racing. Eschewing traditional plots for pure adrenaline, the game drops you behind the wheel of an armed, futuristic combat sports car. Your mission is simple yet brutal: survive a cross-country endurance run across 50 grueling rallies, obliterating mutant drivers, road-hogs, and mechanical hazards while managing a fiercely guarded fuel supply. The Genesis port captures the breakneck pseudo-3D scaling of the original arcade cabinet, delivering a distinctly intense driving experience that predated the true 16-bit racing boom.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

RoadBlasters plays from a third-person, behind-the-car perspective. Unlike standard racers, speed is directly tied to survival; you must constantly collect fuel refilling icons scattered across the asphalt to prevent your engine from dying. Armed to the teeth, your vehicle is equipped with a limitless front-firing laser cannon, alongside tactical secondary weapons like cruise missiles, the devastating particle beam, and the rear-clearing 'spike mine' dropper. Players navigate rolling hills, sharp turns, and treacherous obstacles while dodging Kamikaze bikers and armed helicopters. Reaching checkpoints extends your time and fuel, making precise weapon management and evasive steering paramount to seeing the checkered flag of the final rally.
