Description

The game takes place in the year 2062. A baddy named Moribund Kadaver has assumed control of a cryogenics plant near Monstro City. Kadaver is apparently a former mortician who has dabbled in cryogenics ever since he purchased Deadly Enforcement Aggressive Destruction Incorporated, aka DEAD Inc. Now he has the power to unleash mutants called Psykogenix on the population of Monstro City! The Military Ascertainment Department (MAD) has decided to call upon the world’s most vicious mercenaries: the Skeleton Krew.

Skeleton Krew has you choosing between three members of the deadly organization: Spine, Joint, and Rib. The object of the game is to make it through four planets on your way to stop Kadaver’s nefarious plans.

The areas include Earth, Mars, Venus and finally the Psykogenesis Planet, where you will infiltrate DEAD HQ. A second player can join in for simultaneous play, and you can continue your game via passwords. Skeleton Krew features three difficulty levels.

Skeleton Krew

Overview & History

Developed by Corey Animation and published by Ocean Software in 1995, Skeleton Krew is a late-era Sega Genesis isometric run-and-gun shooter that pushed the console's graphical limits with pre-rendered 3D sprites. Set in a dystopian sci-fi future, the storyline follows a trio of cybernetically enhanced warriors who must free their home planet from the tyrannical grip of a rogue alien mainframe known as Sys-Doom. Despite its impressive, gritty aesthetic and atmospheric cyberpunk soundtrack, the game was released during the twilight of the 16-bit era, leading to limited commercial distribution and subsequent cult-classic status among retro collectors today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrolling shooters, Skeleton Krew utilizes a distinct 3/4 isometric perspective reminiscent of titles like Equinox and Landstalker, though heavily focused on relentless combat. Players can choose between three distinct mercenaries: Vince, Curly, and Slack, each boasting unique weapon loadouts, firing rates, and movement attributes. The gameplay loop demands precise spatial awareness and constant repositioning, as hordes of biomechanical mutants and floating drones attack from multiple elevations. Players must utilize standard directional firing, specialized secondary munitions, and a crucial jump mechanic to clear environmental hazards and dodge enemy projectiles across multi-tiered industrial complexes.
