Centurion: Defender of Rome is a turn-based strategy game. You start with one province, Rome, and one legion. To complete the game, you have to conquer all the provinces on the map.

One part of the game is micro-managing your provinces. You set up tax rates and make people happy by organizing games. In Rome, you can organize a chariot race, a gladiatorial combat or even a simulated naval battle; this starts an action mini-game where you control the chariot rider, gladiator or ship.

Another part of the game is military conquest. You can raise legions or strengthen them in any province you control (let’s just hope there are enough men in the province, or your legion will be incomplete and weaker). There are three types of legions, each of them has a different strength. You can also move a legion to a neighbouring province.

Developed by Bits Laboratory and published by Electronic Arts in 1992, Centurion: Defender of Rome for the Sega Genesis is a fascinating hybrid of grand strategy, resource management, and tactical real-time combat set during the rise of the Roman Republic. Initially released for Amiga and DOS systems in 1990, the Genesis port brought Kelly Sumner and Michael Latham’s historical epic to 16-bit consoles with adapted interface controls. Players assume the role of a low-ranking military officer aiming to climb the cursus honorum—from Centurion to Tribune, Legate, Consul, and ultimately Caesar—by conquering territories, managing the economy of the burgeoning empire, and winning the favor of the Roman Senate and the volatile public.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is divided into distinct phases. On the strategic world map, players oversee provinces, collect taxes, construct roads, bribe or appease neighboring factions like Carthage, Gaul, and Egypt, and recruit legions. When two armies clash, the game shifts to a tactical battle screen where you position infantry, cavalry, and archers, issuing real-time commands such as advancing in testudo formation, charging, or retreating. If you survive the tactical phase, you can also engage in exhilarating, side-view gladiator combat arenas or naval battles featuring ancient triremes. Character moves during gladiatorial fights involve timing your thrusts, blocks, and lunges against diverse opponents wielding tridents, nets, or broadswords, adding intense action elements to the overarching macro-strategy.
