Overview & History

Released by Vic Tokai in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Socket (known as Time Dominator 3D in Japan) is a quirky, fast-paced platformer that slipped beneath the radar during the 16-bit era's twilight. The storyline follows Socket, an electro-charged duck sporting red sneakers, and his sidekick Plug, who are tasked by the Professor to stop the malevolent Time Dominator from altering Earth's historical timeline. While dismissed by some contemporary critics as a generic mascot-platformer clone, the game's relentless momentum and bizarre pseudo-3D parallax backgrounds helped carve out a distinct cult following among Genesis speedrunning enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where players slowly navigate hazards, Socket emphasizes blistering velocity. Socket's primary method of offense and mobility is his continuous electric spin dash, which allows him to ricochet off walls, rocket through vertical loop-de-loops, and bypass enemies entirely if timed correctly. Power-ups scattered across distinct historical eras—ranging from prehistoric jungles to futuristic sci-fi cityscapes—alter Socket's projectile attacks and electrical aura. However, the game demands absolute precision; levels are filled with instant-death hazards, bottomless pits, and strict time limits that punish cautious movement. Players must constantly manage their momentum, utilizing momentum-preserving ramps and trampolines to survive the chaotic screen-scrolling chaos.
