This high-tech combat flight simulator with 360 degree polygon graphics gives you total control of the Army’s most advanced attack helicopter. Imagine carrying the awesome firepower needed to complete 12 dangerous missions. Feel your stomach drop as you jerk the stick to avoid anti-aircraft fire, your heart race as you zoom in and lock on hostile targets, and your palms sweat as you fire your missiles and guns to obliterate them! For even more fun, ask a friend to play co-pilot and help you fly so you can really concentrate on blasting away enemy aircraft and tanks!

Steel Talons

Overview & History

Released by Atari Games and ported to the Sega Genesis by Tengen in 1992, Steel Talons translates the pioneering 3D wireframe arcade combat of a military helicopter simulator onto 16-bit home hardware. Unlike standard side-scrolling shoot-'ups' of the era, this title attempts a pseudo-3D polygonal presentation, tasking players with piloting the advanced experimental AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The storyline drops you behind enemy lines across hostile territories, where your mission is to systematically dismantle heavily fortified enemy installations, armor columns, and anti-air batteries before your fuel and structural integrity deplete entirely.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around navigating a third-person, behind-the-craft perspective through rugged, rolling terrain rendered via early scaling and projection techniques. Missions demand tactical altitude management: fly too high and you expose yourself to lethal surface-to-air missiles; skim too low and you risk crashing into treacherous canyons or enemy structures. Your arsenal includes a rapid-fire chain gun for infantry and soft targets, heat-seeking Hellfire missiles for armored units, and unguided rockets for carpet-bombing base camps. Environmental hazards like enemy radar sites, mobile flak cannons, and treacherous mountain ranges require precise evasive maneuvers, forcing players to master banking, diving, and deploying countermeasures to survive the grueling campaign.
