Description

Bedrock is cracking up! It’s up to you to put it back together. Join TV star Fred Flintstone on his zany quest to help his friends and family. It won’t be easy. Use your club to fend off crabasauruses and other silly sea creatures in a cool underwater level that will leave you holding your breath. Take off across the stone age desert for some tough driving in the trusty Flintmobile. Ride Pterodactyls to breathtaking heights and if you can take the heat, venture into the torturous switch banks of the volcano – whatever it takes to get the job done. The Flintstones come to life.

The Flintstones

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Europe and Australia in 1994 by Taito for the Sega Genesis (and under the title *The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock* in North America as an arcade game), this 16-bit platformer captures the vibrant aesthetic of Hanna-Barbera's legendary Stone Age sitcom. Set against the backdrop of Bedrock and beyond, the storyline kicks off when Fred and Barney stumble upon a treasure map leading to the fabled riches of Sierra Madrock. Eager to strike it rich and buy Wilma and Betty those extravagant gifts they always dreamed of, the two caveman buddies embark on a chaotic, prehistoric cross-country treasure hunt, constantly dodging hazards and outwitting familiar faces from the TV show.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is a fast-paced, side-scrolling platformer that lets players seamlessly toggle between Fred and Barney, each equipped with distinct prehistoric offensive tools. Fred wields a heavy stone club for brutal overhead smashes, while Barney uses a slingshot for ranged attacks, allowing players to adapt to ground-based enemies or flying pterodactyls on the fly. Levels are sprawling, interactive environments filled with giant dinosaur bones, swinging vines, and collectible clams that serve as currency. Players must navigate treacherous vertical scrolling sections, ride wild ostriches, and conquer imaginative bosses like giant saber-toothed cats. The pixel art brilliantly mirrors the cartoon's iconic character designs, accompanied by a bouncy, upbeat chiptune soundtrack that breathes rock-and-roll life into the Stone Age setting.
