The Tick

Overview & History

Released in 1994 by Software Creations and published by Malibu Games, The Tick for the Sega Genesis brings Ben Edlund's satirical superhero satire to the 16-bit era. Capitalizing on the animated series' peak popularity, the game ditches traditional platforming for a chaotic, beat-'em-up brawl packed with fourth-wall-breaking humor and eccentric villains. Players step into the blue boots of the titular invulnerable hero, traversing gritty cityscapes and bizarre dimensions to thwart the evil mastermind Chairface Chippendale and his cabal of goofball thugs.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is a side-scrolling brawler viewed from a traditional perspective, but it injects comic book flair through absurd attack animations and environmental interactions. As The Tick, players can punch, kick, and unleash signature moves like the "Spoon!" battle cry, which temporarily stuns enemies. You can also pick up and throw random objects—ranging from mailboxes to refrigerators—at waves of ninjas, mutants, and circus performers. Health pickups come in the form of coffee and donuts, perfectly matching the comic's quirky tone. While Arthur makes cameo appearances, the bulk of the action relies on The Tick’s lumbering melee combos and grapple attacks to clear stages filled with escalating boss encounters.
