Only the Strongest Warrior will Defeat Death.

Throughout time, Death has tried to overcome his enemy, Life, by sending dark agents to do his bidding. Many have dared and infuriated Death by defeating his agents time and time again. After centuries of plotting his ultimate revenge, Death has taken these heroic warriors from the entire span of humanity’s past, present and future, and pitted them in a ferocious battle in which there can be only one winner.

Now these great champions stand frozen in time, ready to do battle in the ultimate contest of fighting skill – against Death himself – for lasting immortality.

Time Killers

Overview & History

Developed by Incredible Technologies and initially released as a brutal arcade coin-op in 1992 before being ported to the Sega Genesis by Victor Musical Industries in 1996, Time Killers is a notoriously eccentric fighting game that leans heavily into B-movie absurdity. The game's storyline involves a cosmic entity named Death who plucks warriors from distinct eras of human history—ranging from prehistoric cavemen and medieval knights to modern ninjas and futuristic cyborgs—forcing them to battle through time for ultimate supremacy. While the arcade version gained underground notoriety for its sheer gore and heavy metal aesthetic, the Sega Genesis port naturally toned down the crimson while retaining the bizarre premise, clunky physics, and wonderfully distinct period-accurate combatants.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

What sets Time Killers apart from traditional 16-bit fighters like Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat is its infamous limb-severing mechanic. Players can strategically target and hack off their opponent's arms or head during combat using the game's rudimentary three-button attack layout. Losing an arm permanently disables specific attacks, while losing the head results in an instant, comical execution. The character roster features bizarrely named combatants like Todd the caveman, Leif the Viking, Musashi the samurai, Rancid the modern-day punk, and Thantos the futuristic cyborg. Each fighter boasts unique, albeit stiff, animations and historical weaponry. The hit detection is famously unforgiving, and the enemy AI in the single-player campaign offers a steep, cheap challenge that requires mastering specific, repetitive zoning tactics to survive.
