Description

On the edge of the universe, the evil intergalactic goblin Grim Squidge has captured and imprisoned all the stars. He has now scattered them across to faraway planets. While this is happening, a nearby space station picks up a distress signal. Tinhead, guardian of the edge of the universe, hears the cries for help and hurries to the rescue.

TinHead is a platform game. Some exploration is required to find the exit or gather extra health or points. Attacking enemies is done by shooting them with small metal orbs that come out of TinHead’s head. He can shoot them in three different directions: diagonal upward, straight, or just let them jump out and bounce over the ground. The direction is chosen by using a specific button.

Tinhead

Overview & History

Released by Ballistic and developed by MicroProse in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Tinhead is a quirky, overlooked platformer that stands out in the 16-bit library. The storyline follows the titular hero, a robotic guardian whose home planet of Emporia is invaded by the villainous Grim Reaper, who steals the sacred "Spark of Life" to plunge the universe into darkness. Tinhead must journey across bizarre, multi-themed cosmic worlds to reclaim the spark and rescue captive star-sprites. Unlike typical run-and-gun platformers of the era, the game injects a distinct cartoonish sci-fi charm into its level design, featuring planetary maps and inventive gravity-defying stages that push the Genesis hardware with vibrant, colorful sprites and parallax scrolling backgrounds.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tinhead's core mechanic revolves around his unique projectile weaponry. Rather than jumping on enemies, Tinhead fires energy spheres directly from his head in eight directional angles, allowing for precise ranged combat against wacky extraterrestrial foes. Players can collect various power-ups to alter their ammunition type—such as bouncing energy rings, spread shots, and heavy laser beams—or acquire temporary flight capabilities using a jetpack. The level design emphasizes verticality and exploration, often requiring the player to solve light environmental puzzles, activate switches, and navigate moving platforms. Hidden areas containing star-sprites and extra lives reward thorough exploration across the game's expansive outer-space stages.
