True Lies

Overview & History

Released by LJN in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, True Lies adapts James Cameron’s blockbuster action-comedy film into a top-down isometric shooter. Players step into the tactical boots of Harry Tasker, a secret agent for the Omega Sector who must juggle a mundane suburban family life with stopping a radical terrorist group known as the Crimson Jihad. The Genesis version stands out from its 16-bit SNES counterpart by featuring unique sprite work, highly responsive arcade-style shooting mechanics, and explosive pacing that captures the kinetic energy of Arnold Schwarzenegger's cinematic pyrotechnics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tasked with navigating destructible environments ranging from heavily guarded snow-capped ski resorts to bustling city streets, Harry relies on an expansive arsenal. Players can seamlessly cycle through dual pistols, a devastating shotgun, a flamethrower, submachine guns, and proximity mines. Unlike standard run-and-gun titles, the isometric viewpoint requires precise aiming; players must master the ability to shoot diagonally and roll or dive out of enemy crossfire. Certain stages even feature dynamic gameplay shifts, requiring players to rescue hostages while avoiding civilian casualties, or commandeer a snowmobile to blast through pursuing terrorist convoys.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Harry in eight isometric directions
