Description

After a nuclear explosion, New York needs rebuilding. This has barely started when the ‘Big Valley’ gang enters and takes full control themselves. The Government sends a pair of heavies known as the Crude Dudes in to clear them out.

As one of these Crude Dudes, you must travel through tough streets and take out Big Valley’s people, destroying their vehicles and avoiding the force of their weaponry. Foes include werewolves, skeletons and hunchbacks. Gameplay is essentially Streets of Rage-style beat ’em up driven, with bosses on each level.

Two Crude Dudes

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1991 for arcades before roaring onto the Sega Genesis in 1992, Two Crude Dudes (originally known in Japan as Crude Buster) is a delightfully gritty, post-apocalyptic side-scrolling beat 'em up. Set in a ruined New York City in the year 2010—shattered by a catastrophic underground nuclear blast—the world has fallen under the tyrannical rule of a mysterious organization known as the Bigizers. The President of the United States drafts two augmented, tank-top-wearing mercenaries named Wally and Ray. Equipped with cybernetic enhancements and a reckless attitude, these titular "Crude Dudes" must punch, throw, and slam their way through hordes of mutants, heavily armed mercenaries, and towering biomechanical bosses to restore freedom to the wasteland.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard brawlers of the era, Two Crude Dudes introduces unique verticality and environmental interaction. Players can not only punch and jump but also rip massive concrete slabs, steel girders, lampposts, and even enemies right out of the ground to use as devastating melee weapons or throwable projectiles. The Genesis port captures the chaotic cooperative magic of the arcade original, allowing two players to team up. The characters possess a robust moveset: a standard combo punch, a devastating dash attack, and a high-flying aerial drop kick. Furthermore, by pressing jump and attack simultaneously, players can unleash a screen-clearing energy burst at the cost of a small fraction of their health. The game spans several distinct, hazard-filled stages—ranging from toxic subway tunnels to high-tech laboratories—culminating in frantic multi-tiered boss fights that truly test your reflexes and positioning.
